WARDOGS Beginner’s Guide: How to Play, Score and Survive
WARDOGS drops three factions onto a huge map to fight over one objective. It isn’t team deathmatch. You win by holding the Control Zone, and you pay for every bit of kit you carry with Cash that stays with you between matches.
This guide covers what you need for your first few matches: how scoring works, what to buy, how progression unlocks gear, and the habits that keep you alive.
WARDOGS in one line: Buy a cheap kit, get to the zone, stay alive in it, and help your team while you’re there.
How a Match Works
- Up to 100 players across three factions, so roughly 33 per team.
- Everyone fights over a 2 × 2 km Control Zone placed somewhere on the map.
- Having more live players in the zone fills your scoring bar. Each full bar is 1 point, and the first team to 100 points wins.
- Inside the Control Zone is a smaller Hot Zone. Each player in it counts double for control and earns double Cash. It moves during the match.
- Drill towers around the zone can be captured for Cash and XP. Each one gives your team part of a code, and with enough of it your team can drag the Hot Zone towards a tower it’s ready to defend.
- You spawn at your faction’s HQ, where you buy kit and vehicles and form squads. It can be a long way from the zone, so getting there is part of the game. A spawn vehicle parked near the fight lets your team deploy much closer.
10 players in the Hot Zone = 20 players towards scoring
Why Survival Matters
Dying costs you the kit you were carrying, the Cash to replace it, and the trip back from HQ. Staying alive saves money and time.
Tip: Matches can run for over an hour. One careful life in the zone is worth more than five rushed ones.
The Three Factions
Every match is a three-way fight. All three factions use the same armoury, vehicles and progression, so your choice is about looks and lore, not power.
| Faction | Colour | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Lonestar | Blue | Western private military contractors, the heavy hitters of the mercenary world. They answer to whoever pays them. |
| Manticore | Green | Persia’s shadow army, running deniable operations out of Tehran. |
| Valkyra | Red | A Soviet-aligned force fighting to restore the old People’s Republic. |
In Season 2, Lonestar’s uniforms were toned down so they stand out less, and faction spawn positions were moved.
Which Faction Should You Pick?
Any of them. Pick one, find a squad and learn the game. Watch out for the third faction: while you’re fighting one team, the other is often moving round your flank.
Green pushing our left, red still on the ridge.
Your First Match, Step by Step
- Pick any faction. It doesn’t matter while you’re learning.
- Buy a cheap loadout (see below). Keep most of your $10,000.
- Find a lift. Jump in a truck heading for the zone. Be wary of helicopters with unknown pilots.
- Stop short of the zone. Look for your teammates, the enemy and the Hot Zone before you move in.
- Get into the zone and stay alive. Use buildings, ridges and walls.
- Do something useful: shoot, spot, revive, build or deliver supplies.
- When you die, use the vendor’s rebuy last loadout to refill your kit and adjust it before you pay.
Your First Loadout (Season 2)
| Slot | Budget | Recommended | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Bushmaster M17S (free) | AK74 (~$800) | TCX-SPR (~$3,200) |
| Optic | Iron sights | Red dot | Red dot or LPVO |
| Helmet | None | Level 1 (~$200) | Level 2 (~$500) |
| Armour | Level 1 (~$400, 3 kg) | Level 1 | Level 2 (~$1,000, 4.5 kg) |
| Backpack | Scout (~$350, 8 slots) | Field (~$650, 12 slots) | Operator (~$800, 15 slots) |
| Specialist gear | Binoculars (~$75) | Binoculars | Field Resuscitator (~$425, Medic 2) |
| Extras | 2 mags, loose ammo, bandages | 3 mags, bandages, 1 smoke | 3 mags, bandages, smoke, parachute (~$500) |
Optic and magazine prices weren’t confirmed for Season 2. Check the vendor before you buy.
Magazines and Ammo
Your weapon comes with one magazine. Buy two or three spare magazines and carry loose ammo in your backpack to refill them in the field. It takes up far less space than a backpack full of magazines. Check that the ammo fits your weapon and the magazine fits both. Backpack ammo stacks are capped at 50.
Armour and Weight
Every kilogram slows you down, and heavier armour tiers climb fast. Stay light while you learn. Level 4 helmets also muffle your hearing and narrow your view.
How Progression Works
WARDOGS has no fixed classes. What you carry decides your role, and XP goes into six tracks: Assault, Medic, Recon, Support, Driver and Pilot. Your overall Wardog level rises alongside them.
Reaching a level only makes an item available. You then pay a one-off unlock fee, and after that the normal price each life.
| Track | Level | Unlock | Unlock fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medic | 2 | Field Resuscitator | $10,000 |
| Driver | 2 | Kodiak Pickup | ~$15,000 |
| Driver | 3 | Ural | – |
| Medic | 4 | MP5 | $25,000 |
| Recon | 5 | SKS | – |
| Support | 5 | RPG-7 | – |
| Recon | 8 | Range Finder | – |
| Medic | 14 | Medical Bag | $50,000 |
| Driver | 14 | Humvee | $75,000 |
Unlock fees marked “–” weren’t confirmed for Season 2. Check the vendor.
Tip: Pick one track you enjoy and unlock its first tool before spending on anything flashy.
Ways to Help (and Get Paid)
| Job | What you do | Track |
|---|---|---|
| Rifleman | Hold the zone and win fights | Assault |
| Medic | Revive and heal teammates | Medic |
| Spotter | Mark enemies with binoculars | Recon |
| Builder | Build F.O.B defences | Support |
| Taxi | Ferry players and supplies to the zone | Driver or Pilot |
| Vehicle hunter | Destroy enemy vehicles with launchers | Support |
Building Basics
Buy a hammer at HQ and equip it to open the build menu. Structures use supplies stored in your F.O.B, so check what’s available before you place anything. While building, aim for the yellow X on the structure. Hitting it builds much faster than hitting random spots.
Survival Habits
- Don’t rush every fight. Hold a good angle and let the enemy come to you.
- Never stand on a crest. Lie just below it so you’re not outlined against the sky.
- Set your zero. Most weapons start at about 100 m. Use Page Up / Page Down (default) for longer shots.
- Choose your pilot. Only board a helicopter if you’ve seen that pilot land safely.
- Rain matters. It cuts spotting range, so expect enemies to get closer before you see them.
- Open your parachute early. It won’t open below about 10 m, and opening below about 50 m can hurt you.
Use VOIP
Short, clear callouts help everyone. Say what, where and how far:
Two infantry, north ridge, 400 metres.
Need a Medic, behind the blue building.
Vehicle coming in from the east road.
Moving into the Hot Zone, cover me.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Treating it like deathmatch. Kills help, but points come from the zone.
- Spending your whole $10,000 at once. Two or three cheap lives beat one expensive one.
- Forgetting spare magazines. One mag runs out fast.
- Overloading your backpack. Heavy kit makes you slow and easy to catch.
- Flying with strangers. A bad pilot can wipe a whole squad’s loadouts in seconds.
- Switching teams to join the winners. Once a team leads by more than 10 points, you can’t switch for 15 minutes after joining, and switchers can’t use the spawn vehicle until they’ve reached the zone.
- Going quiet. If you don’t call it out, your team can’t react to it.
Remember: Nobody plays perfectly in their first matches. Stay cheap, stay in the zone, talk to your team and find the job you enjoy.
Values are for Season 2 (Update 0.2.0). WARDOGS is in Early Access, so numbers can change between updates.
